How to Apply for the China Work Permit for Foreign Graduates

Acadia here presents the following FAQ for how foreign graduates to work in Shanghai on the latest policies.

Question 1:

What are the conditions for foreign outstanding graduates and talents to apply for Work Permit (Class A)?

Answer 1:

  • Graduates with a bachelor’s degree or above from the top 10 universities in the world.
  • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field doctoral students under 40 years of age who graduated from the top 200 universities in the world in the past five years.
  • Talents under 40 years of age who have engaged in post-doctoral research at universities, research institutions, enterprises, and medical institutions at home and abroad.

Tips: Eligible applicants can apply for a Work Permit for up to 5 years at the top.

Question 2:

What are the conditions for foreign outstanding university graduates to apply for Work Permit (Class B)?

Answer 2:

Bachelor’s degree or above from the top 500 universities in the world in the (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) STEM field, and engaging in work related to the professional field.

Tips: Eligible applicants will be granted a work permit valid for at least 3 years.

Question 3:

What are the conditions for foreign outstanding university graduates to apply for Work Permit (Class C)?

Answer 3: 

  • Foreign graduates from Shanghai or China
  • Foreign students who have obtained a bachelor’s degree or above from a university in Shanghai and intend to work in the “Double Self” (Zhangjiang National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone or China (Shanghai) pilot free trade zone, hereinafter referred to as “Double Self”) and “Lingang” areas, Hongqiao Business District, “Five New Towns” (Jiading, Qingpu, Songjiang, Fengxian, Nanhui) and the companies in Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Occupation List.
  • Outstanding foreign students who have obtained a master’s degree or above from a university in China and intend to work in Shanghai.
  • Foreign graduates from overseas universities
  • Foreign students who have obtained a bachelor’s degree or above from a high-level university outside the country (territory) and intend to work in the “Double Self” (Zhangjiang National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone or China (Shanghai) pilot free trade zone, hereinafter referred to as “Double Self”) and “Lingang” areas, Hongqiao Business District, “Five New Towns (Jiading, Qingpu, Songjiang, Fengxian, Nanhui)” and the companies in Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Occupation List.
  • Outstanding foreign graduates who have obtained a master’s degree or above from a high-level university abroad and intend to work in Shanghai.
  • Internship Program with German Government and French Government  
  • French interns must be enrolled in universities (including vocational and technical colleges) or graduates who have graduated less than one year.
  • German interns must meet the needs of students who have completed at least four semesters of higher education in both universities (including vocational and technical colleges) or graduates who have graduated less than one year.

Tips: The graduation period for foreign students and foreign graduates from overseas universities has been relaxed from 1 year to 2 years.
